Metal Inside(r) Home Quarantine is Metal Insider’s new column during this time of isolation due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We asked artists five questions on what’s been keeping them busy ranging from their favorite movies, food they’ve been eating, music they’ve been listening to and more. We caught up with Elm (Italian noise rock rulers) as they’ve been spending this time feeding pigeons, reading books, and being occupied with different stuff.
What have you been doing to pass time during Quarantine?
We’re living in different houses, so everyone of us was occupied in different stuff: basically we played/wrote a lot, we did some smart working (for our “white collar” life) and real working too (as one of us has a dayjob work as pharmacist), we fed pigeons, uploaded old music on the tube, read some books. Oh, and we went to the grocery store.
Have you been listening to any music or have any playlists worth checking out?
Clearly we’ve been listening to a lot of music. ELM has always been the result of four different individuals, with different tastes and influences, ranging from metal to jazz, from Mississippi to Italy, so as a result our playlist is quite different: we created a secret playlist for Metal Insider, so you can have a taste of that spirit. You can find it here.
A lot of people have been spending this time cooking including making their own bread, what food have you been prepping during this time?
Hey! We’re Italians, of course we’ve been cooking: meatloaf, traditional dishes from our region (Piemonte), pizza and all sorts of oven stuff, homemade pasta, pork ribs, you name it…
Then we ate a lot of French cheese (we live just a few km from the borders). With some bottles of red wine from our land: Barolo, Barbaresco, Barbera… We love red wine.
In terms of entertainment, what movies, TV shows, books, or games have been keeping you busy?
Tv shows: Star Wars: The Mandalorian, Hunters, Money Heist, Westworld, Ozark, The Leftovers, Mad Men, Too Old to Die Young, Boardwalk Empire
Movies: The Swimmer, No Country for Old Men, Giant, On the Bowery, There Will Be Blood
Books: Gravity’s Rainbow (Thomas Pynchon), All the Pretty Horses (Cormac McCharty), Grimm’s Fairy Tales, The Conformist (Alberto Moravia), Bullet Park (John Cheever), An Autobiography (Weegee), Broken music (Sting), Rien va plus (Antonio Manzini), A Fault at the Edge of the Galaxy (Etgar Keret)…
Games: Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Destiny
What advice do you have for your fans in isolation during this time?
Stay creative, stay drunk, never surrender. And, of course, listen to ELM. Join the cult.
