metallica-through-the-never-banner-650x330After a less than stellar reception at the box office, Metallica has announced the release date of their 3D concert film, Metallica Through the Never. And while it’s only made back $7.8 million of its $18 million production budget so far, it looks like they’re going to be making their budget back – one piece of the stage at a time. The film will be released on January 28, 2014 on DVD, Blu-ray, 3D Blu-ray, digitally and via Video On Demand.  And there will be a range of extras. All of the physical releases will be released in standard 2-disc packages and special expanded versions.

The limited edition Metclub-only version of the film is where they’ll really make their money back. While it doesn’t say how much it will cost, the 1,000-run version will include a 3-disc Blu-ray version, a ‘Metallica Through the Never’ bandanna, a lithograph movie poster autographed by all four members of the band, and a piece of  “Doris,” the statue of lady justice, that was in the film, along with a letter of authenticity.

Since there are only 1,000 of those being made, it’s not like they’re going to make an overwhelming amount, but they’re slowly making their money back. Considering that the soundtrack to the film has sold more than 60,000 copies already, and that a lot of Metallica completists will pick up the DVD/Blu-Ray when it comes out, it’ll likely continue to make money after it’s release. Not to mention, the film basically calls attention to the band’s back catalog. The band’s self-titled album sold another 2,000 copies this week.

In other Metallica news, the band announced that they’ll be teaming up once again with the San Francisco Giants for another ‘Metallica Night.’ Here’s what the band had to say via their website:

Winter might be right around the corner, but we’re already thinking about baseball! We had such an amazing time last year supporting our local team and hanging at the yard that we jumped at the chance to do it all again with the San Francisco Giants as the second annual Metallica Night will take place on Friday, May 16, 2014. When the Giants take the field that night against the Miami Marlins, we’ll be on hand to kick it off with the National Anthem and first pitch, joining the orange and black faithful for the rest of the evening for all kinds of Metalli-fun and games.

Special event tickets for this game go on sale as part of Orange and Black Friday, November 29 at 8:00 AM PST. The special event Metallica ticket package includes a ticket to the game and a limited edition Metallica/Giants goodie that we’ll tell you about at a later date. A portion of the proceeds from every Metallica Night special event ticket will benefit the Little Kids Rock Bay Area Chapter.

Met Club members should log in to the site for details about how they may purchase tickets to the game early.

This is a pretty cool thing, except for the fact that the band says “Metalli-fun and games.”
