When we last checked in with Wolves in the Throne Room, we’d heard “Celestite Mirror” from Celestite, their companion album to 2012’s Celestial Lineage. It was, to say the least, not very black metal. In fact, it was a synth-driven voyage that owed much more to new age, ambient music and movie scores than anything resembling metal. With the album coming out on July 8th, the band have released another song from it, which is streaming on Vice. “Initiation at Neudeg Alm” is about half as long as “Celestite Mirror,” but is still lacking many of the things you’d expect from a  band that essentially helped usher in a new era of black metal – namely, vocals, guitars, drums and bass. If you let go of any preconceived notions of what to expect from WITTR, or if you’ve already heard “Celestite Mirror,” then you’ll definitely dig this. Otherwise, you may be disappointed.

Celestite will be released on the band’s own Artemisia imprint on July 8.
