Welcome to Dissident Aggression, where we sow the future, reap the present and highlight the past to bring you the underground of The Underground…
Question: What do you get when you form a band using current and former members of Nachtmystium, Goatwhore, Usurper, Wolvhammer and Gates of Slumber? Answer: You get a big ol’ bag of awesome called Doomsday. I can not tell you how many times I’ve read a band bio where they talk about how Band X is made up of guys who were in Bands A, B, C & D and I get all excited only to be thoroughly disappointed in the end result of Band X. But Chicago’s Doomsday have set my mind at ease and delivered six tracks of shredding metal goodness.
Doomsday’s self-titled debut hit the street back in November on Disorder Recordings (the label set up by guitar player Jeff Wilson). These guys are going to get a lot of love from the crust and even hardcore scenes. They write punk-infused, blackened bursts of aggression. But behind it all is a distinct old-school Swedish death metal vibe that fans of Entombed, Dismember and Grave can totally get behind. You listen to a track like “Empty Vessel” and you can’t help but think of albums like Left Hand Path or Like An Ever Flowing Stream. Add to the mix the occasional peppering of thrash and what you wind up with is an album that touches all the bases after knocking it out of the park.
This album is relentless in its pummeling assault. There is zero let up on this album. Even when they have a more melodic breakdown it’s still driven by riffs that just gut punch you into submission. But then again with song titles like “I Kill Everything I Fuck” and “Bring Down the Knife” you should probably be prepared for that type of auditory brutality. My only problem with this EP? It’s only an EP. It’s good enough that it leaves me wanting more and because of the brevity I find myself rocking this thing on repeat listens. Definitely looking forward to more from this band in the future.
Metal Homework:
Here’s the part where we go back in time and dig up a lost classic for you to revisit. This week we take a proverbial trip to Boston to bring you Break The Silence by Executioner. One part thrash, one part dirty punk rock, Executioner play it fast and pissed and raw on every track. They also happen to be the band that first unleashed Seth Putnam of A.C. fame on the world. Check out the write up of the album, complete with links to songs for you to sample, over at 666 Days of Metal.com.
