According to the internetz, it’s the International Day of Slayer! We’re not really sure of the origin of this day, but we’re guessing that it began on the only day in which it really made sense, which was five years ago on June 6, 2006, or 6/6/6. Since then, it’s taken on a life of its own, with every June 6 becoming the equivalent to metalheads as April 20 is for potheads. But wait, is 6/6/11 the number of the beast? Um, no, it certainly isn’t.
And is it just us or does the call to arms on the right seem like it was created by a bored 8th grader? “Oooh, I’m a rebel, so I’m going to ditch school so I can stage a full-scale riot by going to the food court and yelling ‘SLAAAYERRRR!’ at the top of my lungs until the Justin Bieber fans fight back – then it’s ON! Oh yeah, and I’m also going to draw a pentagram on my Orange Julius tray. Screw you mall cop, I’m avoiding you.”
As borderline retarded as the day of Slayer (national or international? Why’s the website only national but the flyer says international?) sounds, at the end of the day, its heart is in the right place. Slayer transcend generations and just about every genre of metal. They’ve never really sold out, unless you count Diabolus in Musica, and they get a lifetime pass just based off of the years 1986-1990, when they unleashed Reign In Blood, South of Heaven and Seasons in the Abyss. As you might expect, the band is on board with the movement (?), as Tom Araya has stated his support, and the organizers got to meet the band at both the 2006 Unholy Alliance tour and the 2009 Mayhem festival. I’d like to think that the best way to celebrate is by throwing on one of the three aforementioned albums. Or maybe just by playing some Slayer pinball. But hey, if you’d rather celebrate Slayer day by not listening to Slayer, but knowing they’re a pretty solid band, you can do that. Me, I’m actually going to put off celebrating the national-or-international day of Slayer – until September 14. Until then, get ready for our counter-offensive on July 7th – the International Day of Stryper!
