It’s been well over a decade since System of a Down released anything new. The group’s entire catalog was created in less than ten years and, that right there should say something. While the group revealed West Coast dates as well as headlining this year’s Aftershock Festival, it’s safe to assume that we shouldn’t expect to hear anything new. While we’ve heard tales from drummer John Dolmayan about the band having fifteen fantastic songs, we’ve also heard frontman Serj Tankian admitting that SOAD members do not see eye to eye on creating new tunes and bassist Shavo Odadjian also admitted that there won’t be a new album (for now). Additionally, it looks as though members have moved on as Daron Malakian has shown that with his Scars on Broadway project.

Malakian recently spoke with Kerrang about his project and during that conversation he continued to express that System of a Down are currently not making albums.

He commented:

“I don’t really write for people, and if no-one heard what I wrote I would still write songs. It’s just what I do. If I’m not writing I feel like I’m not doing what I’m here to do. So I have a lot of music that’s still to be released in the future, whether it’s with System or Scars. I have a lot of material.

I think the Scars stuff tends to take more of a rock direction, even though I would say there’s a lot of material on this album that I think has more of a System Of A Down flavour in it than maybe the first Scars album did… As of right now, System’s not making albums, so this is the project through which I’m releasing my songs.”

So you’re saying there’s a chance?
