The next time you walk into an H&M, Forever 21, Kohls, Wal-Mart, Macy’s or just any store that sells clothes, you will notice a not so new trend. Depending on the racks, whether it’s shoes, underwear, T-shirts, or a brand new purse, you will notice items that have metal horns, skulls, AC/DC, Rolling Stones, Guns N’ Roses, Metallica and more.
There are countless consumers walking down the street wearing these said clothes yet, and many have no idea what the symbolism and music behind the band names are. They just think it’s cool and are calling it a fresh fashion statement. Unfortunately, with artists like Justin Bieber, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West appearing to support metal bands, people will use this style as their winter 2018 look and beyond.
With that said, artists are noticing this as well, and a few are pissed. The legendary Dee Snider of Twisted Sister spoke up about this issue via his Twitter and he just can’t take it anymore.
Read his statements below:
That’s right! We literally fought to look the way we did against the same people who want to look like us! https://t.co/SBBLjlxbCo

And that’s what HELPS to expose new people to the music.n Not just wearing a shirt. https://t.co/al9DZQo1Es

Yes we would. But that’s not my point. It would be great if they were embracing the music as well, but they are just “cherry picking”. https://t.co/lnKmNDFg5s

It’s not just the wearing of our metal T’s, it’s their cherry picking of our style #skulls #metalhorns These are OUR symbols; OUR image.

Stunned by how much reaction my fashionistas metal T’s tweet is getting. I think it has surpassed my previous biggest: “I like pancakes.”
— Dee Snider (@deesnider) October 18, 2017
True, but at least that branding is controlled by the band. They’ve made more from their logo than from their music! https://t.co/QnL6J2kjP9

Oh that shit’s been going on FOREVER! And just as phony and disingenuous. https://t.co/m53xSd9x92

I agree and that’s the tough part…lbut we all know that the majority of these fashionistas ain’t. https://t.co/RPADKAMymd

Gotta say, this new trend of non-metal fans wearing vintage metal T’s if pretty sickening. Metal is not ironic! Dicks.
