We’re still early into 2017 and the releases are already pouring in. This week brings a new live Accept release, and studio albums from Code Orange, Sepultura, and more. If you missed last week’s releases, you can check them out here. There has not been too many releases just yet since we’re only two weeks into the year, so it’s no surprise that Metallica and Avenged Sevenfold still have the highest selling metal albums right now.
Code Orange, Forever (Roadrunner)
The Pittsburgh based metalcore band Code Orange is releasing their third full length album, the first since their signing to Roadrunner Records last April. Tonight they will be playing a CD release show to a sold out Rex Theater in Pittsburgh.
Accept, Restless and Live [Live] (Nuclear Blast)
The latest release from the legendary German Accept is the live album/DVD/Blu Ray release, Restless and Live. The album was recorded at various shows during their 2015 tour, including Moscow, St. Petersburg, and more. The album contains 27 songs spanning two CDs, and is also available on video with a Blu Ray/DVD release as well.
Sepultura, Machine Messiah (Nuclear Blast)
Machine Messiah is the fourteenth studio album from the Brazilian groove/thrash metal outfit Sepultura. The album was recorded at Fascination Street Studios, and produced by Jens Bogren (Opeth, Haken, etc). They will be touring in support of it starting this April 6th, alongside Testament and Prong.
Pain of Salvation, In the Passing Light of Day (InsideOut Music)
Sweden’s progressive rock/metal group Pain of Salvation has returned witwith In the Passing Light of Day. Much of the album was inspired by singer/multi-instrumentalist Daniel Gildenlöw fight with a near-fatal illness in 2014. On the topic of the illness and the album Gildenlöw has said “What started off as an annoying infection has, in just hours, suddenly pivoted into the very real possibility of my actual dying. This album also shows the beauty of the transition, of the inevitable. And of the hope of a tomorrow, the hope of change, no matter how frail and naive that hope may be.”
Grave Digger, Healed by Metal (Napalm)
Healed by Metal is Germany’s Grave Digger’s 18th studio album. It comes just a few months after the just got off a North America tour with Blind Guardian. It is also the first album to feature keyboardist Marcus Kniep, who replaced Hans Peter “H.P.” Katzenburg when he left the band in 2015.
Black Anvil, As Was (Relapse)
It’s a bit early to start talking about best albums of 2017, since there’s still a good 46 weeks before all those lists start showing up, but the best-reviewed album so far is probably Black Anvil’s As Was. The NYC band’s fourth album is their most ambitious yet and pushed the boundaries of the somewhat limiting genre of black metal.
