From more than one account, the Def Leppard ‘Hysteria on the High Seas’ tour was a little bit of a bummer. There was, of course, the sad death of Dio/Rainbow bassist Jimmy Bain from lung cancer, who was there to perform with his current band Last In Line. Also, many claimed that the weather was inclement for the majority of the trip, which isn’t exactly conducive to cruise enjoyment. And then there was the fact that the headliner didn’t play a full set the whole time, as singer Joe Elliott, suffering from severe laryngitis, sat out the band’s show, with the band’s Phil Collen and Vivian Campbell filling in on vocals, as well as Mr. Big’s Eric Martin, Kip Winger and Andrew Freeman. It turns out that Elliott’s voice hasn’t gotten any better, however, as the band have postponed the remaining dates of their winter tour with Styx and Tesla.
After returning from the cruise, Def Leppard did play one show, January 29th in Fort Lauderdale, after cancelling the two shows following their return to land. The dates effected run through February 17th. While the band didn’t elaborate on the postponement, other than saying it was due to “illness,” drummer Rick Allen explained that it was Elliott’s voice issues Twitter, stating “the doctor basically said that if Joe continues to sing without resting his throat for a month he might do permanent damage.” The band says details of the makeup dates will be announced soon, with all tickets being honored.
