Babymetal Colbert 2“I’m not sure what I’m about to see… but I’m pretty excited about it,” Stephen Colbert declared while introducing Babymetal on last night’s The Late Show, marking their first ever U.S. TV appearance. It’s safe to say that was everyone’s reaction when they first heard the concept behind the Japanese act. And even after watching them tear through “Gimme Chocolate!!” on the show, we’re sure many who tuned into CBS on a whim to suddenly watch three Japanese cheerleaders backed by a metal band were still confused. But like many metalheads, it seems like the crowd in the Ed Sullivan Theatre fell in love with Babymetal.

A few interesting things about the performance:

a) the confines of a television studio meant that their backing band were more visible than they usually are.
b) instead of playing something from the new album, they went back to their first viral hit. Wonder whether it was a request of Colbert‘s producers, or a move by their management.

Watch Babymetal perform “Gimme Chocolate!!” on The Late Show below. Their new album Metal Resistance (which is already breaking records in the UK) is out now, and they’ll be back in the U.S. next month.
