Metal By Numbers is a weekly column in which we look at the top metal sellers and debuts of the week.

You’ve gotta hand it to Deftones. Not only did they create one of the best albums of their career with Diamond Eyes, they also got the word out to 62,000 of their fans to buy it in the first week, for a #6 debut. This despite the fact that the album leaked about a month out. That’s fan devotion. If you want to consider Godsmack “metal,” which they technically are sort of, then they have the #1 album, with their fifth album, Oracle selling 117,000 for the top slot.

Notable Debuts:

Godsmack, Oracle (Universal) #1 117,000 sold
This marks their third consecutive album to debut at #1 on the charts. And don’t kid yourself, their little beef with Nikki Sixx didn’t contribute to the high sales.

Deftones, Diamond Eyes (Reprise) #6 62,000
The band only sold 14,000 less during their first week than their last album, 2006’s Saturday Night Wrist. On the other hand, Godsmack’s last album, also released in 2006, sold 94,000 more than this one.

Nonpoint, Miracle (Rocket Science) #59 8,000 sold
Maybe sales will increase with help from their appearance at this year’s Ozzfest (or at least in the six cities the tour is actually stopping at). Regardless, not a bad showing for the band.

Jackyl, When Moonshine and Dynamite Collide (Mighty Loud) #170 3,400 sold
Jackyl’s been a bit out of the spotlight for a while, but their chainsaw-wielding, Playgirl-posing frontman Jesse James Dupree is appearing on the Tru TV show Full Throttle Saloon.

Mike Patton, Mondo Cane (Ipecac) 2,500 sold
Patton will be too busy participating in Faith No More reunion shows to tour behind his Italian pop orchestra project, and we’re not complaining!

Avantasia, The Wicked Symphony (Nuclear Blast) 1,000 sold
Edguy vocalist Tobias Sammet’s power metal project has a moderate first week.

Notable Sales:

AC/DC, AC/DC: Iron Man 2 (Columbia) #8 54,000 sold
It’s only a 5% increase during the hits package’s third week, but don’t expect to see the Iron Man 2 “soundtrack” leave anytime soon.

Bullet For My Valentine, Fever (Jive) #25 22,000 sold.
A big 68% decrease, but the band can still gloat about selling 70 thousand and “666” copies last week. We promise, this is the last time we will make a “666” joke regarding the album’s sales.

Slash, Slash (EMI) #78 6,900 sold
Slash’s debut solo album has sold over 110,000 albums in 5 weeks.

Drowning Pool, Drowning Pool (Eleven-Seven) #91 6,300 sold
Just about half of what the band’s fourth album sold in its first week. Will Ozzfest help them continue to sell more this summer? Guess they have as good of a chance as Nonpoint.

Sevendust, Cold Day Memory (7 Bros.) #100 5,900 sold
A 25% decrease in their third week, but still an impressive run for Sevendust, who have sold over 41,000 already.

Cypress Hill, Rise Up (Capital) #105 5,800 sold
If we can continue to talk about Limp Bizkit, then why can’t we mention these rap legends?

Coheed and Cambria, Year Of The Black Rainbow (Colombia) #120 5,000 sold
Slipping down the charts pretty fast during its four week run.

Five Finger Death Punch, War Is The Answer (Prospect Park) #145 3,900 sold
This album just isn’t budging from the charts.

Alice In Chains, Black Gives Way To Blue (Virgin) #159 3,500 sold
Congrats to bassist Mike Inez, who just married his longtime girlfriend this past weekend. Uncongratulations to original bassist Mike Starr, currently appearing on Sober House.

Ratt, Infestation (Loud & Proud) # 175 3,300 sold
Still infesting the charts in its third week (awful pun, but I had to).

Motley Crue, Greatest Hits (Motley Records) #176 3,300 sold
Same deal as last week, which includes the same confusion we have towards this greatest hits album’s success.

Brian Posehn, Fart & Wiener Jokes (Relapse) 960 sold
A 68% decrease for the metal comedian. Still the best selling album of the week about Metal, Farts and Wieners though!

We Came As Romans, To Plant A Seed (Equal Vision) 900 sold
A big 49% increase in sales.

War Of Ages, Eternal (Facedown) 780 sold
Around the same place as last week.

Periphery, Periphery (Sumerian) 740 sold
Their debut album is starting to decrease slowly in its third week, kind of appearing on the periphery of the charts. Seriously people, we hope you don’t come here for the jokes.

Veil Of Maya, ID (Sumerian) 600 sold
The album is in its fifth week and it’s doing not too shabby.

2Cents, Dress To Kill (Eight O Five) 500 sold
The bands’ recent tours with Korn and Five Finger Death Punch have helped bring their third album back to life (even if just for a bit). Their terrible cover of Nine Inch Nails’ “Head Like a Hole,” on the other hand, made us want to boycott them.

Overkill, Ironbound (E1) 400 sold
Welcome back Overkill! Great to see you after being absent from the charts last week!
