For a band who’s complex instrumentals embrace time changes and synchronization so much, it’s safe to say that trio Animals As Leaders have a firm grasp on arithmetic. It’s because of this that we’re surprised the band’s first single from their upcoming album is titled “Arithmophobia.” The song premiered today via Guitar World, and it’s a stunner. Taken from the band’s forthcoming fourth album, The Madness of Many, it’s a six-minute adventure in rhythmic complexity that includes plenty of arithmetic. There’s a little bit of a middle-eastern vibe going on in the song, in between the frantic bass pummeling and presice drums. The band is obviously psyched about the album, which is kicked off by “Arithmophobia”:
“This album feels like total synergy between the three of us,” says guitarist Tosin Abasi. “None of this music would have turned out the same way without the equal inclusion of all of our musical ideas and that feel special. We’re beyond thrilled with the result.”
Adds drummer Matt Garstka: “The Madness of Many is an explorative and ambitious journey of harmony, rhythm, musical expression and emotion. It has been the most collaborative effort for the band and an evolution in each of the members’ musical path. Although conceptually dense, it is the most natural-sounding Animals As Leaders album yet.”
AAL will be undertaking a tour with Intervals and PLINI, and you can catch those dates after the track. The Madness of Many will be out on November 11th on Sumerian Records, and can be preordered here.
