skeletonwitchOne of our favorite websites without the word “metal” in it is The Onion’s AV ClubThey cover all genres of entertainment, and most genres of music as well, with more than a healthy dollop of heavy stuff. In fact, many of you might be familiar with the site due to GWAR’s covers of “Carry On Wayward Son” and “Get Out of My Dreams, Get Into My Car.”  But beyond that, they have a feature called ‘Hatesong,’ where a musician talks about a song they can’t stand and the reasoning behind it. This past week, it happened to be Skeletonwitch bassist Evan Linger talking about how much he hated Barenaked Ladies’ once-ubiquitous 1998 anthem “One Week.”

We can’t blame the guy. That song is smug, jokey, and was impossible to ignore, and it’s aged about as well as the Bloodhound Gang, which is to say not very. But the ‘Hatesong’ entries are fun to read regardless, since usually they say a bit about the artist that’s doing the hating. Linger hates the song because the band does the theme song for The Big Bang Theory, because one of the guys in the video has a “weird fishbowl fat head,” and mainly, because the song is so upbeat.

Not exactly the best reasons in the world, but it’s still an entertaining article that spread over the Thanksgiving weekend. In fact, it spread all the way to Barenaked Ladies themselves, who responded with a Tweet that was a picture of a restaurant featuring the slogan “positive eating + positive living.” “I don’t think Evan would like this restaurant #hateisthenewlunch #positiveliving.” Skeletonwitch, quick on the draw, responded “not if they serve “the Chinese chicken,” referring to a line in “One Week.”  Then BNL tweeted “Could I get a Skeletonwich, hold the bone?? Yes, that’s right, MY bone. Hold it #hateisthenewlove #onelove #saymyname”. Skeletonwitch, seeing that the band were taking everything in stride, replied promising the band some t-shirts, stating they would arrive in “about #oneweek.” So now if you go to see the Barenaked Ladies (which you probably won’t), and they’re wearing Skeletonwitch shirts, you’ll know why.
