If there’s one thing that Dream Theater fans are, it’s active internet users. And many of them are also hopeful that the most internet-active of it’s current and former members, Mike Portnoy, will one day drum again for the band. So obviously when Portnoy and guitarist John Petrucci appeared in a picture together all the way back in January suggesting they spent New Years together, the pic, posted by Portnoy, led to quite a bit of chatter that he might be returning to the fold. Unfortunately for those fans, and fortunately for Mike Mangini, Petrucci shot down the conjecture in an interview. Speaking to Music Radar about the G3 tour, Petrucci commented:
Mike and I have maintained a relationship and have been friends all these years. Our families are all good friends, and we’ve gotten together several times. That just was the first time we took a photo and posted a photo. [There’s] nothing to read into, other than it’s good to maintain good relationships. That’s really all it is.
He also says that the last time they hung out (which we’re assuming is New Year’s eve/day), Portnoy gave him the new Sons of Apollo, Neal Morse and Flying Colors records to listen to.
