Slayer’s Kerry King was insulted by Rick Rubin’s label offer

The new Slayer album, Repentless, is their first in nearly 30 years without producer Rick Rubin being involved. Their first release together was Reign in Blood, way back in 1986, so it was a big deal when they signed a deal with Nuclear Blast last year.

Why the split? In a recent interview with “The Metal Hammer Magazine Show,” founding guitarist Kerry King says it came down to the offer Slayer got from Rubin’s label American:

“Solidarity is far stronger than jumping ship and going somewhere else. I thought we’d still be on American — but when we got the offer from American, I was insulted. That, to me, just said, ‘Good luck, you’re not gonna have good luck here anymore.’ So we found our new friends at Nuclear Blast.”

Said vocalist / bassist Tom Araya in the same interview:

“It was more like he broke the news to us,” Araya said. “When we started this record, it was on the pretext that we’d be working with Rick — but things didn’t pan out. We’ve sort of moved on.”

Slayer has certaintly moving on. Since the release of 2009’s World Painted Blood, they’ve endured the passing of founding guitarist Jeff Hanneman who died in 2013, and the departure of drummer Dave Lombardo. Repentless will be the first for returning drummer Paul Bostaph, and will feature Exodus guitarist Gary Holt on the album, too.

A new song, “When the Stillness Comes,” from Repentless came out this past April. It will be released worldwide on September 11th via Nuclear Blast.
