Dream Theater has officially started production on their sixteenth studio album, marking their first LP since drummer Mike Portnoy’s return last October. Portnoy, who co-founded the band in 1985 with guitarist John Petrucci and bassist John Myung, contributed to ten Dream Theater albums over a 20-year period before departing in 2010.

On Instagram, the band shared a photo of Portnoy alongside Petrucci, Myung, singer James LaBrie, and keyboardist Jordan Rudess in the studio, announcing, “DT16 is officially underway!” This would mark the overall follow-up to 2021’s A View from the Top of the World and Portnoy’s first album with the group since 2009’s Black Clouds & Silver Linings.
