The Dillinger Escape Plan have no problem with subverting expectations – remember their Plagiarism EP that found them covering Justin Timberlake and Massive Attack? At any rate, the math-metal (they really need a better descriptor) band have teamed up with rapper Jarren Benton for a track on the Converse Cons Volume 2 EP, a series that prides itself on non-traditional pairings, kind of like the Judgment Night soundtrack for a different generation.. The first EP featured Harry Fraud with the Internet, Trash Talk with Flatbush Zombies and the Shrine with Barrett Avner, among others. Noisey premiered their collaboration today.
“Rage,” the song in question, features a tight, jerky rhythm from Dillinger that essentially turns into a dub song for Benton to spit lyrics over. It’s pretty innovative, and works better over speakers than you might think it would on paper. The other tracks on the EP feature pairings from Vince Staples and Bad Rabbits, Black Milk and BADBADNOTGOOD, Kevin Gates and Rustie, and once again Trash Talk with Flatbush Zombies.
