It’s been 12 years since NY hip-hop trio De La Soul have released an album, and they returned in a big way today with the release of And The Anonymous Suffering. They announced they were recording their ninth album last year via a Kickstarter campaign, surpassing it’s $110,000 goal in less than 10 hours. ULtimately, the album raised $600,000, and it shows, with cameos from the likes of Snoop Dogg, David Byrne, and Damon Albarn, to name a few. One of the guests on the album is The Darkness’ Justin Hawkins, and he pops up on the surprisingly rocking track “Lord Intended.” Less than one minute in, there’s a Megadeth reference (“Kill the King”), and over a beat that sounds mined from Nas, the seven minute song builds in intensity to Hawkins’ Freddie Mercury-like chorus of “fuck everyone.” The last three minutes is a total shredfest. This song’s a must-listen if you’re a fan of The Darkness, De La Soul, or hip-hop in general.

and the Anonymous Nobody is available now.
