Already a band with an amazing reputation for their live show, Dallas quintet Power Trip have been not-so-quietly gaining fans in the eight years of their existence. 2013’s Manifest Decimation put them on the map, and while there are plenty of other thrash-throwback bands, Power Trip do it with a unique brand of intensity and musicianship. It’s no exaggeration to say their music sounds like a lost demo from the tape trading days where the Cro Mags’ hardcore and punk cross over to Slayer’s thrash. The band got some new eyes on them earlier this year as openers for Lamb of God, Anthrax and Deafheaven, and they bring a little bit of the influence of both headliners to their music.
They’ve just announced their sophomore album, Nightmare Logic, due out on February 22nd on Southern Lord, and they did so via a new song, “Firing Squad,” that debuted via NPR. Looking for a change in musical direction for the second album? If this is any indication, that’s not about to happen, nor would you really want it to. The article on NPR compares the song to Motorhead, in it’s “massive rawness and a sludgy, heavy hopelessness that thrashes with punk immediacy and metal intricacy.” Sure, we’ll go with that. Either way, it’s giving us something to look forward to next year, and with the year that 2016 has been, February 22nd can’t come fast enough.
