The release calendar comes to a screeching halt this week, with just two releases we’re aware of. Thankfully, one of them is the long-awaited return of one of the premier metalcore acts of the last decade. Alaska’s pride and joy, 36 Crazyfists, are back from a long time off with their seventh album. Enjoy!
36 Crazyfists, Time and Trauma (Spinefarm)
Five years between albums clearly has done nothing to blunt the strength of 36 Crazyfists. Time and Trauma sounds as if it was recorded a few weeks after the completion of Collisions and Castaways, rather than a few years after. Longtime fans will love the record for being a worthy successor to the 2010 album, while newcomers will be drawn to the top-notch musicianship that 36 Crazyfists has displayed on their music. And if you can’t get enough of 36CF, be sure to check out lead singer Brock Lindow’s column Snipe City, where he talks all things hockey for your reading pleasure.
Sumac, The Deal (Profound Lore)
Many were bummed when Isis broke up a few years back, but we all knew we’d be hearing from Aaron Turner again eventually. Now he’s returned with Sumac, which also features Baptists drummer Nick Yacyshyn and Russian Circles bassist Brian Cook. If Turner’s label Hydra Head Records was still releasing new music and could be summed up as one band, it would be Sumac.
