We’ve known for a little while that Ghost would be releasing a new EP this Fall. With the announcement of their Popestar tour that kicks off next week, they’ve decided to release a track from the as-yet-untitled EP. “Square Hammer” premiered this morning on SiriusXM’s Octane channel. As would be fitting of a song that premiered on the satellite’s rock channel and not their metal one, it’s a little more straight-ahead rock. It’s refreshing and fun, if not the heaviest thing they’ve put out. It reminds us on first listen a little of Type O Negative’s “My Girlfriend’s Girlfriend.”
Maybe the EP will have more originals on it, but they said that it would be mainly covers. In an interview, a nameless ghoul called the EP “More R.E.M. than Black Sabbath.” This sounds like neither, but if the rest of their next album is as poppy and commercial as “Square Hammer,” they could be moving a little away from the heavier stuff. Don’t get us wrong though, this is catchy as hell, and when the next album comes out, Papa Emeritus IV should have a blast singing it.
