If you’ve ever seen Metallica live or footage of them playing live in recent years, you’ve probably noticed more than once that bassist Robert Trujillo has quite the crab walk going when he plays. If you don’t know what we’re talking about, please refer to the video above. Trujillo was recently interviewed by Muscle & Fitness Magazine about how he is able to sustain the walk.

“I’m a pretty avid surfer — I try to surf as much as possible. And I grew up skateboarding and snowboarding. So, I think my natural style is related to some of the board sports I’ve done over the years; and then that kind of evolved into this thing. I can remember the first time I did that crab walk was actually with Ozzy [Osbourne], when I played in his band back in ’96 at a show in Las Vegas.”

Welp, there you have it. Now when you watch Trujillo perform you can picture him surfing or something and maybe it’ll make a bit more sense. Maybe.
