As you read last week, Static-X has reunited. But it’s more like The Smashing Pumpkins reuniting than, say, Refused, since Wayne Static is the only original member of the band (and also, because both frontmen have interesting hair situations). At any rate, original bassist Tony Campos, who also played bass on Prong’s recent album Carved Into Stone, weighed in on his decision to skip touring with Static-X (and Prong, who they’re touring with).
I keep getting asked about this Static-X/Prong tour coming up, so I want to clear up a few things. I have no interest in working with Wayne Static, now, or anytime in the foreseeable future, so I will not be part of this version of Static-X. As for Prong, I will not be performing with them due to my current commitments to Soulfly. However, I do look forward to working with Prong again in the near future. If you haven’t checked out Carved Into Stone yet, what the hell are you waiting for?
So there you have it. Wayne is currently touring with Sean Davidson on drums, Ashes on guitar and Brent Ashley on bass, or the same lineup he toured with for his solo album. Static described his dealings with Campos during a recent interview as a “business relationship,” saying the the two have never been that close. Given that Campos has also played with Ministry, Attika 7, Soulfly and Possessed, it’s understandable that Campos might be somewhat of a journeyman bassist, and there’s nothing wrong with going where the money is. That being said, it’s a bit insincere for Static to tour with an entirely different band from Static-X and still call it that.
