Stone Temple Pilots are probably best-known for their vocalist moreso than the DeLeo brothers who have been in the band since they started. Scott Weiland was a fantastic singer that helped elevate the band beyond their other peers in the second wave of grunge. Of course, once he reached fame, his struggles with drugs and alcohol overshadowed the rest of the band, and he wound up getting kicked out of the band back in 2013. Sadly, his struggles continued and he died a little less than a year ago. By then, the band had continued on with another singer, Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington. They released an EP together, and toured a few times, but ultimately, he returned back to Linkin.
Since then, Stone Temple Pilots haven’t done much, other than audition singer. There were rumors that Creed singer Scott Stapp would join the band. That ultimately didn’t happen, but in a few degrees of separation, he did join Art of Anarchy, the band whose debut album, Weiland sang on. Where does that leave Stone Temple Pilots? Well, auditioning singers, and there’s an early favorite to be the new guy – Jeff Gutt.
Who’s Jeff Gutt, you might ask? We sure did. Apparently, he was on The X Factor, an American Idol-like show, back in 2013. Entertainment Tonight said that Gutt was a lock, but that’s not the case yet, as the band reached out to Entertainment Weekly, stating “That band has been rehearsing with several singers over the past few weeks. They haven’t made a decision yet.”
