7) Ides of Gemini, Old World New Wave
One of the most unique outfits in all of the metal pantheon, Ides of Gemini once again proved why they are one of the more awe-inspiring bands in the world. Their brand of occult/psych rock is played to mesmerizing perfection on this album, replete with mystical visions of ancient rituals held in the dead of night.
Key Track: “The Adversary”
6) Lord Mantis, Death Mask
Chicago’s Lord Mantis are the new kings of a scene that has delivered up some of the best metal releases of the last five years. Death Mask is an absolutely nihilistic assault upon the senses seething with bad intentions for anyone who ventures within striking distance. It’s an unholy barrage of blackened sludge/doom unlike just about anything else you’ll hear in 2014.
Key Track: “Body Choke”
5) Triptykon, Melana Chasmata
Tom G. Warrior and his not-so-merry band of musical cohorts triumphantly returned with the follow up album to their stellar debut. Melana Chasmata walks many varied paths and is a much more experimental record than its predecessor but at the same time loses none of the intensity that have made Triptykon such an intense outfit.
Key Track: “In the Sleep of Death”
