Paws, Pets & Metal is Metal Insider’s newest column on bands with pets, discovering who watches them on the road, and more. Get to know more about these metal furbabies. We caught up with The Aphelion vocalist/bassist Evan Haydon-Selkirk as his pets differ between Leprous and The Smashing Pumkins.
Tell us more about your pet(s) and their names?
Well I have Odin, who is a lovely little 10 year old frenchie/boston terrier/pug mix, and my favourite little weirdo in the entire universe. He likes berries, hard boiled eggs, and whatever it is that my partner or I are currently eating! We also have Daisy, she’s a 6 year old tuxedo cat and she’s the most affectionate little cat I’ve ever met. She yells at me until I pick her up and put her on my shoulder, and other than me she loves freeze dried shrimp, those weird little cat yogurt tubes, and getting into trouble when she doesn’t get attention.
Have you ever taken your pet on tour?
Daisy hates road trips so that’s a big no. Odin is actually pretty good in the car but I don’t think I’d be able to handle the stress of keeping tabs on an animal and keeping him happy while also dealing with the stress and chaos of being on the road.
Who looks after your pet while on the road?
Generally speaking, my partner Christy will take care of them while I’m away, which is lovely because I have near-instant access to new pictures and videos of them if I get lonesome!
What’s your pet’s favorite song or album?
Odin always gets really stoked whenever I put on In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, and he seems to quite like Leprous as well! Daisy on the other hand doesn’t seem very keen on metal, I think she’s a Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness girlie.
How did you introduce your pet to metal?
Well neither of them really have a choice. My home studio where I do all my demoing and mixing is in my bedroom, so they’re both forced to hear it all the time. Even when I’m not working I still use those speakers for casual listening, so they really didn’t have a chance.
What animal charity means most to you?
I adopted my first cat from Furry Tales Cat Rescue, and they do all sorts of work rehabilitating strays that are senior, sick, dying, abandoned, and rehoming them where they can. I really love what they do and I think anyone thinking of adopting should consider them, and certainly anyone considering buying an animal from a pet store, breeder, etc, should really consider adopting from a rescue!
