If you have a heart, this film will break it. This is in the what I call “failed relationships” genre, complimenting films like Amour and Blue Valentine. It lets you watch a genuine and meaningful romantic relationship develop, succeed, and then crumble at the fate of their offspring. In depth discussions of religion, science, guilt, and their intersections are palpable, and somehow avoid coming off heavy handed due to the chemistry and sincerity of the two leads. One more lighthearted aspect of the film is the music, with several awesome folk songs performed by the characters. The songs don’t only lyrically tie in to the film’s circumstances, but the subtleties to the characters’ ways of performing the songs provide a new dimension to relating to them. Another thing I really enjoyed was the unique foreign perspective on American culture. This is the kind of film that will make you appreciate what and who you have while you have them. It earns the otherwise cheesy affirmation that our appreciation for life grows with loss.
