From Richmond and want to pay tribute to the town’s greatest export while drinking? As promised last year via a crowdfunding campaign, GWARbar has opened. The bar, located at 217 W. Clay Street, opened on New Year’s Eve, serving what they call “intergalactic junk food.” The restaurant was the brainchild of Jonathan Staples of James River Distillery and departed lead singer Dave Brockie.
One thing that all GWAR fans can look forward to is their own GWAR tiki mug. Holdan Westland of California’s Tiki Farm has created a custom mug design. With Brockie tragically not around to see his dream come true, GWAR guitarist Michael Derks is the main GWAR member behind the bar and restaurant. He spoke about the food there:
“The thing most people are surprised about is just how damn good the food is. Head chef Jeremy Dutra (drummer for Richmond’s own US Bastards) has made my vision of gourmet junk food rock! With items like our Scumdogs (house made sausages) and McDuckets (a duck, chicken, cheese and truffle nugget) we are turning your guilty pleasures into gastronomic masterpieces!”
So we know where we’ll be hanging out after the GWAR-B-Q this year, at least! The food sounds good enough to attract people that never even heard of GWAR, although if you’re from Richmond, it doesn’t seem like that’s possible.
