Make no mistake – Dream Theater was Mike Portnoy’s baby. The drummer co-founded the band back in 1985 and remained in it until leaving in 2010, so he’s put a lot of equity into the band. But that doesn’t give him the right to complain about a fan that wore a shirt for A Dramatic Tun of Events to a signing he did. In a since-deleted post on his Facebook page, he railed against a fan at an event saying “Somebody came to my signing today wearing a “Dramatic Turn Of Events” shirt… REALLY??? Couldn’t find a DT shirt from 1985-2010? Please try to use come sensibility/sensitivity when choosing a shirt for an MP event…”
He likely either read the comments about the post or thought about it for a minute and realized how douchy that came off, because he removed the post relatively quickly. He then made a clarification on his page about his comment:
Once again everyone’s got their panties in a bundle and have taken a post of mine and turned it into sensationalized “news”….ugh!
Look…it’s as simple as this: do what you want, say what you want, listen to what you want, wear whatever shirt you want…it’s a free world!!
All I’m saying is remember there are human beings on the other side of your words and actions!

Well, first of all, if you state something like that, you have to know that anyone that’s a fan of you and/or has written about you or your bands in the past is going to get involved. It’s what we do! Also, the t-shirt wearer probably had no idea that he’d be potentially pissing off Portnoy, unless he was totally trolling. To suggest that a music fan can’t like both post-Portnoy Dream Theater and Portnoy’s projects is ridiculous. You don’t see Ozzy getting pissed off for someone wearing a Dio shirt to a show, and if Josh Homme kicked anyone out of a Queens of the Stone Age show for wearing a Kyuss Lives! shirt, we haven’t heard about it yet. It’s hard to imagine Portnoy, who’s well-versed in social media, would post something like this, and at least he had a change of heart after posting it.
