Apparently, the Sound City documentary wasn’t enough for Dave Grohl, as he’s landed himself an HBO series. The series, as yet untitled, will document the making of Foo Fighters’ eighth album, and Grohl will be directing it. It’s being recorded in eight different cities, Chicago, Austin, Nashville, Los Angeles, Seattle, New Orleans, Washington D.C. and New York. One song was recorded in each city, with each song being recorded at a legendary studio in the city, with notable locals sitting in. And according to the press release, Grohl held off on writing lyrics until the last day of each session to be inspired by the history and character of each location.

The series, set to air this Fall, will mark Foo Fighters’ 20th anniversary as a band. Grohl calls the series “a love letter to the history of American music.” That’s pretty much exactly what we called Sound City, actually.  “Dave’s heartfelt passion for this project is contagious, and his talent as a musician and filmmaker is undeniable,” says Michael Lombardo, president, HBO Programming. “We are excited to go on this journey with him and Foo Fighters for this insider’s look at how regional music inspired them to create their own new music.” We can think of at least one person that probably won’t be huddled around their TV this Fall, however.
