Metal By Numbers is a weekly column in which we look at the top metal sellers and debuts of the week.
Winger and Sebastian Bach, huh? I would exclaim “What year is it?!” if not for the fact that there’s also a new Aborted album. Otherwise, it’s slim pickins in terms of debuts for this week. In fact, the #10 album nationwide only sold a paltry 13,800 copies, a new low. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go pay respects to something else from the late ’80s: Who Framed Roger Rabbit, starring the late great Bob Hoskins.
Notable Debuts:
Sebastian Bach, Give ‘Em Hell (Frontiers)
The former Skid Row frontman’s fifth solo album is his best chart debut ever not with Skid Row. Fun fact: Duff McKagan played bass on it. Another fun fact: Sebastian Bach doesn’t like our website much at all.
Winger, Better Days Comin’ (Frontiers) #79, 3,600 sold
Not what you were expecting this week, eh? The band’s fifth album is out, and if you want to hear what they sound like in 2014 you can do so here.
Aborted, Necrotic Manifesto (Century Media) 320 sold
The band’s eighth studio album slaughters its way to the charts.
Notable Sales:
Chevelle, La Gargola (Epic) #47, 5,500 sold
Still in the top 50 after 34% drop.
Black Label Society, Catacombs of the Black Vatican (eOne) #57, 4,550 sold
A drop of 41% this week.
The Pretty Reckless, Going To Hell (Razor & Tie) #81, 3,600 sold
This sticks around with only a 12% drop.
Avenged Sevenfold, Hail To The King (Warner Bros.) #86, 3,525 sold
Just under 460,000 sold.
Five Finger Death Punch, The Wrong Side of Heaven and the Righteous Side of Hell Vol. 2 (Prospect Park) #99, 3,200 sold
So the band came away with two Revolver Golden God awards. Yay?
Sevendust, Time Travelers & Bonfires (7brothers) #101, 3,200 sold
A second week 78% drop.
Various Artists, Ronnie James Dio – This Is Your Life (Rhino) #118, 2,675 sold
Honestly, with Metallica’s “Ronnie Rising” track, I would be okay if the next Metallica album turned out to be Garage Inc. Part II.
Volbeat, Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies (Universal/Republic) #149, 2,175 sold
The album is at a higher position than last week (#182) but still had a drop of 4%.
Of Mice & Men, Restoring Force (Rise) #165, 2,075 sold
Looks like Lenny got a hold of this one with a 30% drop (if you don’t get that reference, go read a book, jeez).
Five Finger Death Punch, The Wrong Side of Heaven and the Righteous Side of Hell Vol. 1 (Prospect Park) #175, 1,925 sold
Just under 380,000 sold.
Bring Me The Horizon, Sempiternal (Epitaph) #177, 1,900 sold
Let’s take a minute to observe that there aren’t many other successful band’s named after a quote from Pirates of the Caribbean.
Memphis May Fire, Unconditional (Rise) #180, 1,875 sold
A drop of 39%.
Emmure, Eternal Enemies (Victory) #194, 1,775 sold
Did you see Emmure’s totally not stupid t-shirt that was pulled from their online store?
Skillet, Rise (Atlantic) #197, 1,750 sold
This doesn’t rise from a 30% drop.
Triptykon, Melana Chasmata (Century Media) 1,000 sold
I was listening to this while writing and then briefly paused so I could judge the new Winger track. Somewhere, a black metal fan is doubled over and shrieking.
Kyng, Burn The Serum (Razor & Tie) 940 sold
A drop of 59%.
I Declare War, We Are Violent People By Nature (Artery) 670 sold
Apparently, a violent nature brings sales down by 58%.
Cilver, In My Head (LP Media) 570 sold
This pops back up on the charts again.
Crown The Empire, The Fallout (Rise) 490 sold
Another boost of 9%.
Cult Leader, Nothing For Us Here (Deathwish Inc.) 480 sold
A 24% drop.
Nothing, Guilty of Everything (Relapse) 420 sold
A 54% boost brings this back up from nothing.
Gemini Syndrome, Lux (Warner Bros.) 420 sold
Just under 20,000 sold.
Babymetal, Babymetal (VAP Japan) 390 sold
Nobody puts Babymetal in the corner..except after a 27% drop.
Deafheaven, Sunbather (Deathwish) 370 sold
Bathing in a 27% drop.
For The Fallen Dreams, Heavy Hearts (Rise) 370 sold
Fallen by a 43% drop.
Delain, The Human Contradiction (Napalm) 350 sold
A 53% drop is only human.
Gamma Ray, Empire of the Undead (Eagle Rock) 340 sold
The Japanese bonus track is titled “Someday”, which is presumably not a Nickleback cover.
Sonata Arctica, Pariah’s Child (Nuclear Blast) 330 sold
A 21% drop.
Righteous Vendetta, The Fire Inside (EBM) 320 sold
A 12% boost keeps the fire going.
Kataklysm, Waiting For The End To Come (Nuclear Blast) 410 sold
The band’s US tour has caused this to resurface.
The Birds of Satan, The Birds of Satan (Shanabelle) 289 sold
The wings are clipped with an 80% drop.
