We already knew that Deafheaven’s Sunbather wouldn’t be a typical black metal album from the easy-to-read typography and pink album art that was revealed. Now the band have given listeners the first peek at the new album, in the form of the nine-minute epic “Dream House” that kicks off the album and is now streaming on NPR. “It’d be easy to call this “shoegaze black metal,” in fact, if there weren’t blast beats and George Clarke’s tortured vocals, it’s almost dream pop-like. Chiming guitars and breakdowns for the first half of the song lead to a sparse single guitar midsection with that kicks into a half-time outro that lasts for the remainder of the song. It’s downright inspirational.

Sunbather will be released on June 11 on Deathwish Inc.
