As promised last week, Metallica revealed the lineup to the second annual Orion Music + More Festival this morning. Being held at Belle Isle in Detroit on June 8 and 9, Metallica will be headlining their own festival with (drum roll please…) Red Hot Chili Peppers, Deftones, Rise Against and Bassnectar. Also slated to appear will be Dropkick Murphys, The Dillinger Escape Plan, FLAG (one of the Black Flag reunions), Gogol Bordello, Tomahawk, The Silversun Pickups, Battlecross, 12th Planet, All Shall Perish and many others.
Lars Ulrich had the following to say about this year’s edition of Orion:
“Last year’s Orion Music + More festival was hands down the highlight of the Metallica calendar. A great time was had by all, especially the band members. The fact that it also resonated with enough of our fans and friends that it warrants another go-around in ’13 is beyond exciting. I can think of no better place than the Motor City, with its rich and diverse history of music, for the second ride on our Orion festival train. Bring it the fuck on!”
This year’s Orion promises to bring back each member of Metallica’s side stages (including James Hetfield’s car and motorcycle showcase and Kirk Hammett’s Crypt). And chances are that there will still be plenty of more bands added to the bill leading up to June. But so far, we think that this is a nice balance of heavy and non-heavy acts (at least compared to the first round of lineup announcements last year). Sure, many will complain about the fair amount of EDM acts playing on the bill, but Metallica also grabbed The Dillinger Escape Plan, All Shall Parish, Fu Manchu AND Battlecross (not to mention one Black Flag reunion). And Red Hot Chili Peppers (who share the same management with Metallica) will bring in the non-metal fans Metallica hope to attract to the festival. Plus, both bands have been longtime friends, with bassist Flea being the one to induct Metallica into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.
