We admit that we found it pretty funny that the FBI had listed the Juggalos as one of the criminal gangs they were closely monitoring in their 2011 National Gang Threat Assessment. As it turns out, though, the Insane Clown Posse didn’t find it humorous at all. So much so that they’re looking into taking the Bureau to court.
While speaking in the Seminar tent last Friday at 13th annual Gathering of the Juggalos, Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope revealed that they were planning to sue the FBI for listing them as a criminal gang in their report, which put them amongst Bloods, Crips, and the Aryan Brotherhood. “No matter what it costs, what it takes, we are as of right now officially suing the FBI,” Violent J told an estimated 1,500 fans. Video of ICP making the announcement and reflecting on the backlash Juggalos have been receiving can be seen above.
But that’s not all the ICP is doing. In addition, their label Psychopathic Records launched the site juggalosfightback.com, where fans are being encouraged to share stories of how their rights have been impacted for being fans of ICP. Part of the statement that appears on the website reads as follows:
“We want to show our appreciation and support for our fans and we are prepared to assist you in learning about your legal rights and to fight for you in Court, if possible. Please take the time to fill out the questionnaire so we can keep apprised of this situation and assist you in getting the legal help that you deserve as a Juggalo.”
While we’ve without question poked fun of the ICP and its fan base plenty, and whether they truly have a legal case against the FBI is up for debate, we have to applaud them for their efforts in giving support to their fans. Sure, there are many who embody the stereotypes of Juggalos in real life. However, no group of fans should be subjected to extreme legal harassment simply over their preference in music. Being a Juggalo doesn’t necessarily make you a criminal, just as listening to metal doesn’t make you a killer. The fact that the ICP is standing up for their fans is more than admirable to say the least.
