A previously unheard instrumental cover of Madonna’s “Frozen,” recorded by the late Chuck Schuldiner of Death and Control Denied, has surfaced online. The track was shared on Tuesday (11) by Schuldiner’s nephew, Chris Steele, who posted a video of himself playing the demo through his car stereo. Steele revealed that Schuldiner recorded the cover during the early stages of his battle with cancer, making it one of the final pieces of music he worked on before his passing in 2001.
The instrumental reimagining is both haunting and powerful, an unexpectedly fitting choice from Madonna’s catalog to receive the Schuldiner treatment. If any of her songs were destined for a metal transformation, “Frozen,” with its dark atmosphere, was one excellent decision.
Chris Steele said the following:
“Found this today going through some things. Chuck recorded this in the early stages of his battle with cancer, I remember it well. Chuck sitting in his bedroom with his stealth and a drum machine. I’m not sure how many people outside of the family and a few friends have heard this but it’s all yours. Chuck’s version of Madonna’s 1998 single “Frozen”.
-Chris Steele”
