Paws, Pets & Metal is Metal Insider’s ongoing column on bands with pets, discovering who watches them on the road, and more. Get to know more about these metal furbabies. We caught up with Heinous Exsanguination vocalist JP reveals his pets enjoy brutal death metal.
Tell us more about your pet(s) and their names?
Absolutely! I’ve always grown up with pets. We always had dogs and cats growing up as well as a parrot for a while. Since moving out and starting my own family we’ve had Boston terriers. Our first one, Phoebe, unfortunately, had a tumor and passed away at the young age of 6, but now we have a 3-year-old Boston Terrier named Murphy. Murphy is absolutely crazy. Haha no we love him but he definitely has a more hyper personality than our female did, but he’s great and he’s also great with my daughter.
Have you ever taken your pet on tour?
Heinous Exsanguination is actually just a studio/online project as one member is in Florida and one member is in Texas. Mitchell is a front-of-house engineer for different touring bands and goes on long tours away from home, but his dogs stay behind with friends and family. We do take Murphy on vacations with us though!
Who looks after your pet while on the road?
As stated above, we don’t do any touring, but we do take our dog on vacation with us. He’s great about going out and about with us and loves all the attention from random strangers.
What’s your pet’s favorite song or album?
We have this conversation often, and he has a couple of different albums that he brings up consistently. The first one is Disfigurement of Flesh – Herbarium With Grotesque Necrotic Malformations, a slamming brutal death classic that he can easily groove to. The other is Gorepot – A Friend With Weed is a Friend Indeed. I think he might be a stoner…
How did you introduce your pet to metal?
I can’t say for certain, but it’s extremely likely that Murphy heard metal on the car ride home the day we got him. If not then it was definitely later that day at home haha. I listen to a lot of metal, so there was no way for him not to be introduced to it.
What animal charity means most to you?
There are lots of great animal charities that do a lot of great work to help better the lives of animals and protect wildlife as well as provide education to the public. I think it is also important to focus on the smaller scale and more local organizations as well. There are lots of local charities, foundations, and shelters that do great work to help animals in need. Whether it be rehabilitation, rehoming, or something else, I think they deserve a little more spotlight and they are the organizations and people that mean the most to myself.
