Eddie Sutton, the iconic singer of New York hardcore/metal band Leeway, has passed away at 59 after a four-year battle with cancer. The sad news was shared yesterday (20th) on Eddie’s Instagram page.
“Edward Anthony Pomponio Passed 4/19/24 peacefully in his sleep. We would like to invite all his extended family to come say good bye to our son and brother. The wake will be held Tuesday, 4/23/24 at Farenga Funeral Home 3808 Ditmars Blvd Astoria, Queens NY 11105 From 3pm-8pm.”
Updates on Sutton’s condition, including a GoFundMe page launched over three years ago, addressed his ongoing fight against the aggressive form of lung cancer. The most recent was roughly a day before the singer’s death, shared on his Instagram, asking for everyone to send supporting messages during the dire time. A few weeks prior, Eddie himself expressed his determination to outsmart medical professionals, stating:
“I’ve now been in hospice care for about 6 days and I’m still trying to prove the professionals wrong and try to keep hope alive. The problem is my appetite….as much as I want to eat and crave so many foods I just can’t seem to swallow it or the smell becomes nauseating, to me. It’s quite a torture….try to imagine wanting to eat but your taste buds make it taste different or there’s something in the food that makes you feel sick. I have to rely on the same things; Ensure nutritional drinks and fruit cups to supplement whatever I can stomach and even that is minimal because my stomach muscle is so infantly small. I’m still fighting folks I’m not stopping.”
Sutton’s fight against the disease came to an unfortunate end on Friday (19th).
Our thoughts go out to Eddie’s family and friends during this difficult time.
