Metal Inside(r) Home Quarantine is Metal Insider’s new column during this time of isolation due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We asked artists five questions on what’s been keeping them busy ranging from their favorite movies, food they’ve been eating, music they’ve been listening to and more. We caught up with Faith & Scars’ Roger Glenn (vocals/guitar), Brandon Hill (bass/vocals), Lee Hutt (drums), and Logan X (guitar/vocals) as they’ve been spending this time becoming a stronger band.
What have you been doing to pass time during Quarantine?
Roger: We’ve been spending this time to get closer as a family & a unit. Staying in constant contact, and video chatting every night to stay up to date. We’ve also been practicing hard, & writing new material! Isolation has us hungry, and eager for what’s to come.
Brandon: Building on what Roger said, we’ve mostly been focusing on becoming stronger as a band. Every day we do something for the band and we report on our individual achievements at the end of the day in a group call.
Lee: I’ve been spending this time with my family and honing my craft. I’ve been in and out of the practice space working hard to improve and keep my skill level where it is at.
Logan: I’ve been using my time to work on some new riffs, catch up on some classic movies, do a little self reflection, & spend quality time with the family and loved ones while we were trapped together.
Have you been listening to any music or have any playlists worth checking out?
Roger: I’ve been in a Blues mood lately! Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, SRV. There’s just an indescribable feeling that overcomes me when they come on. It’s like witnessing the birth of Rock & Roll first hand.
Brandon: We all listen to a lot of music! Personally, I cycle between my ‘Car Ride 2020 Playlist’ which has everything from Bishop Briggs, NF, & Dirty Honey to Rival Sons, Shallow Side & Audioslave. There’s also my ‘Motivation Playlist’, which starts off with NF, Shinedown & Black Stone Cherry, and ends with artists like Nothing More with their song “Do You Really Want It”. It also gets into the heavier side of things with bands like Wage War, A Day To Remember & Gemini Syndrome. We listen to a bit of everything really.
Lee: Most of the music I listen to is very different from the music we perform. I like to draw influence from a wide variety of artists ranging from Ghost Note to Dirty Loops. I like to use those as lessons in my own practice routine and translate them into spots for our live show.
Logan: I have been listening to a lot of different music. Artists include Frank Sinatra, Alter Bridge, Kid Rock, & Five Finger Death Punch. They’ve all been in my most played artists for a few months now.
A lot of people have been spending this time cooking including making their own bread, what food have you been prepping during this time?
Roger: I’m not much of a cook. I’m more of an occasional grill operator, but my wife made a loaf of bread from scratch the other night! It turned out to be the size of a spare tire, but it was delicious!
Brandon: We love to grill out! Roger cooks a mean steak!
Lee: When it comes to cooking at home it’s usually whatever is simple and easy, as long as it’s somewhat healthy!
Logan: I am one of the people making bread! My bread machine has been getting quite the workout! I’ve also been using it to make pizza dough for homemade pizza! But I’ll never argue with night of grilling out.
In terms of entertainment, what movies, TV shows, books, or games have been keeping you busy?
Roger: Anything wrestling related! WWE Network has been a mainstay in our house since the ‘stay at home’ order. I’ve been a huge wrestling fan since I was 3, so it’s super cool to go back in the archives and relive the ‘Attitude Era’ with my wife and watch her reactions! On Wednesdays I’m also really enjoying AEW on TNT!
Brandon: We all like to play a little Red Dead Redemption 2. I also just beat the story to Injustice 2. I’ve been watching a lot of SciFi movies lately too. One of my favorites would have to be Interstellar. & if there’s a book series I’d recommend, it’d be Pendragon by D.J MacHale. Those books are amazing!
Lee: When I’m not practicing or working on the band, I’ve been watching a lot of old school shows on Netflix and Hulu. Shows like Futurama and Criminal Minds have been great relaxants for me.
Logan: I’ve been using this time to catch up on some old school movies that have been on the bucket list for a while. Titles like Dazed and Confused, Taxi, & The Godfather. For games, I bounce between my consoles on GTA 5, Sea of Thieves, and VR on the PS4.
What advice do you have for your fans in isolation during this time?
Roger: Hey, just stay calm & kind. This is a scary time, uncertain to say the least, but it isn’t a time to panic. Even as divided as we may seem, we can use this time to recenter ourselves, and come out the other side stronger than ever before. I’m not a Doctor, a Scientist, or an expert. But from one human to another, please keep the faith.
Brandon: Stay Proactive and healthy. Wash your hands. Find something to take your mind off of the craziness happening in the world. Learn a new skill that you can take with you once the world opens back up.
Lee: My advice is stay active and find a routine. The more time you spend sitting, the more you’ll feel down. Go outside and find an activity to do with a friend or family member that gets your mind off of the drama behind the quarantine. There is a lot you can do with this time off, use it well, and don’t waste it!
Logan: I would tell everyone to think of their neighbors during this time. Help each other while being as safe as you can. I’d tell them that in these uncertain times we can overcome all obstacles, united as one. Quarantine is tough, but we should be careful not to lose ourselves or our humanity in the process.
