Remember Smashing Pumpkins? Their breakthrough album Siamese Dream is a stone cold classic, but around the time they changed their name to The Smashing Pumpkins and insisted everyone call them that, we kind of lost interest in the pretentiousness of it all. Frontman Billy Corgan has followed suit, as he’s now calling himself William Patrick Corgan after releasing his first proper solo album. He recently appeared on Joe Rogan’s popular podcast, and Rogan, probably psyched to talk to a 90’s rock god about wrestling and music, made a crack about Canadian punching bag Nickelback. Corgan replied that singer Chad Kroeger is “an incredible songwriter.” He went on to make a porn metaphor that’s a little confusing:
“I don’t know enough about their world, but I don’t think there’s anything wrong if that’s who you want to be. Pop is predicated on satisfying. I’ve said many times pop is porn. It’s porn, they want to get you off. It’s just how they’re going to get you off. I’m not that concerned with getting you off, I’m just not.”
Well, good for him. At the very least, Corgan took a stand for a hacky joke, so he’s to be commended for that. So far Kroeger hasn’t responded to Corgan’s compliment.
