The internet has made music truly a global thing. How else can you explain Steve ‘n’ Seagulls, a Finnish band that sound more like they’re on a back porch in the Appalachian Mountains. Their acoustic hillbilly-esque takes of metal classics found an audience on YouTube, where their cover of AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck” became a viral hit a few years ago (27 million views and counting). The band released an album last year, Farm Machine, and they’re back again with Brothers in Farms, coming out this Friday (9) on Spinefarm Records.
While the title is a takeoff on Dire Straits’ Brothers in Arms, There aren’t any Dire Straits songs covered. There are, however, more songs covered by AC/DC (“It’s a Long Way To the Top”), Iron Maiden (“Aces High”), Nirvana (“In Bloom”) and a pair of Guns N’ Roses covers from the Use Your Illusion albums. They cover “You Could Be Mine” and “November Rain,” which premiered on Wall Street Journal today. While their version isn’t as grandiose as GNR’s take, it’s fun, which you probably couldn’t say about the eight-minute 1991 original. Here’s what double bassist/vocalist Leevi Pukki says of the song
“It’s an epic piece and one of our childhood favorites. And besides, we just had to have an all-male duet on the album.”
