For as long as we can remember, it’s been thought that going to shows is calming. It makes you happy. And who wouldn’t be happy if they got the chance to see a band they liked live? But now there’s actually scientific evidence supporting this. Yes, you heard right. There’s proof that live music is good for you. A study done by the Centre For Performance Science in London collected saliva samples from 117 people from two different shows. Why saliva? Because it can show what chemicals are floating around inside you; and in this case- stress related chemicals! Scientists found lowered levels of glucocorticoids, progesterone and cortisol, all are indicators of stress. It’s important to note these lower levels were found in samples taken after shows. According to the head of the study, Daisy Fancourt:
“This is the first preliminary evidence that attending a cultural event can have an impact on endocrine activity.”
Which, if you think about it, is great news. Not only are we enjoying ourselves, but we’re actually doing something good for ourselves too. This is a great first step, but we’d like to see a similar study done with metal shows.
