On Friday, Stone Sour will release Straight Outta Burbank, their second of three planned covers EPs, for Record Store Day. We’ve already gotten a chance to hear their covers of the Rolling Stones and Bad Brains, and they’re, well, Stone Sour covers of the Rolling Stones and Bad Brains. Not bad, but not particularly necessary either. We’re really holding out to hear what their take of Slayer’s “Seasons in the Abyss” will sound like, but before then, they’ve released their cover of Iron Maiden’s “Running Free.” Like the other two songs we’ve heard, it doesn’t deviate that far from the original, but Maiden figures a little more directly into their lineage, and covering an early song from the band instead of one of the more obvious, is a move that pays off pretty well for the band. Here’s what Corey Taylor told Metal Hammer, who premiered the song:

“If you’re going to cover something, then you want to make sure you go for the best. It’s no secret that I’m a huge Iron Maiden fan because… I mean… it’s f–king Maiden, man! They’ve got so many great songs and I think they’ve got two vocalists that really led the charge you know. Not to put anything down that they did with Blaze [Bayley], but growing up it was [Paul] Di’Anno and [Bruce] Dickinson for me. So it was just a case of figuring out which tune we wanted to do and ‘Running Free’ just had the spirit of what we were looking for.”

“It’s kick ass, it’s driving, it’s got the great Maiden guitar breaks that makes them such a special band. So, once we settled on that song and really got into it, we were really stoked.”

We’ll hear the remaining covers, of “Seasons” and Motley Crue’s “Too Fast For Love” soon enough. In the meantime, you can pick up Straight Outta Burbank on Friday, along with other releases, at your local independent record store.
