Slayer might be the most fearsome of the Big Four, but they’ve gotta soundcheck too. Instead of busting out songs they’ve been playing for over 30 years, they appear to enjoy busting out some classic rock covers. One of the perks of their VIP packages is allowing fans to attend their soundchecks, and while Kerry King isn’t as present on guitar, as he’s not really a cover player, the other three members of the band appear to be enjoying themselves, with fan-filmed footage showing the band playing ZZ Top’s “Tush” and Led Zeppelin’s Rock and Roll” in Raleigh, NC and Dawson Creek, BC, respecitvely. Holt seems to have a grin on his face that seems to say “I can’t believe I’m playing a ZZ Top song with a flip flop-wearing Tom Araya.” And not for nothing, while it’s not like Araya is Robert Plant or anything, he admirably covers the songs. And Gary shreds. One gets the feeling that if things ultimately dont’ work out for Slayer, you’ll see him pop up onstage at a local bar occasionally, blissfully playing classic rock covers with whoever will have him.
