If there’s one thing the Westboro Baptist Church thrives on, it’s attention. If there’s one thing that they can’t stand, it’s being ignored. With the fringe group of assholes announcing plans to picket Slayer guitarist Jeff Hanneman’s public memorial taking place tomorrow, Slayer have appealed to their fans to do the right thing, which is ignore them completely. In a posting on their Facebook page, the band said the following:
MESSAGE TO FANS:
Want to really piss off the Westboro Baptist Church at Jeff’s Memorial Celebration? Do exactly what Slayer members and family are going to do – totally ignore them. They don’t exist. And then come inside and celebrate Jeff’s life with us.
This is definitely the right thing to do. Every Slayer fan would like to beat up a WBC member, or at least see to it that they’re publicly humiliated. And while we can think of plenty of ways we’d want do to that, even mentioning them tomorrow would be taking away from Hanneman’s legacy and making it less about the celebration of one of metal’s most memorable guitarists. So if you’re planning on heading to the ceremony, ignore the clowns with the picket signs.
