The cinematic musical performance of the Dutch band Carach Angren are back, distinguished by the uncompromising darkness of their lyrics and the somber movements of their compositions. The Cult of Kariba marks a return to their roots, adding to the story from their 2008 debut, Lammendam, with a fresh, enigmatic EP.
Playing like a black and white horror film, the story unfolds with “A Malevolent Force Stirs.” A peaceful voice calls the cattle to a ritual that promises to be from the underworld, musically unleashing the next track, “Draw Blood,” featuring blistering guitar riffs and heart-rending screams, appearing lost in darkness. The instrumental passages are everything, lined with orchestral shifts seeming almost ceremonial, and the subtle sound of the violin marks the histrionic awakening of a powerful take on symphonic black metal.
Cutting into the harmonious “The Resurrection of Kariba” is a dazzling sound of the keys, marking an innovative track. It dances between the beauty of a dreamy, pain-filled ballad and the evil darkness of resonances. Carach Angren have taken a step further with this EP compared to the rest of their discography.
With a much more futuristic sound, the album unravels into a story told lyrically about the cult and resurrection of a poisonous witch. The band’s first song in Dutch, “Ik Kom Uit Het Graf,” showcases their modern side with synthesizers, adding industrial cuts and passages that evoke feminine sensuality in search of revenge. Finally, “Venomous 1666” is the culmination of this folklore tale that began over fifteen years ago. With powerful musical execution, it restores the cinematic color offered by underworld gore films. Seregor’s vocals remain fascinating throughout as he becomes one with the instrumentation, to the point that it seems to be a composition in the best “cult style” that we could find.
The Cult of Kariba demonstrates the group’s growth by maintaining the distinctiveness of Carach Angren while adding a modern twist to the continuation of a story they’ve remained faithful to since their inception. Greater power and well-crafted lyrics complete an EP whose overall composition is fully realized, making it a must-listen for those looking for a dark and distinctive style.
