Renowned guitarist, singer, and producer Rick Derringer died on Monday (26) at 77. The news was confirmed by longtime friend and caretaker Tony Wilson, who shared that Derringer died at AdventHealth ICU in Ormond Beach, Florida, surrounded by his wife, Jenda Derringer and loved ones. No official cause of death was given, though there Variety reports he had been ill in recent months.

Derringer’s career soared in the 1960s with The McCoys and their hit “Hang On Sloopy.” His solo career spanned decades, producing iconic tracks like “Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo” and “Real American,” the latter famously used as Hulk Hogan’s entrance theme and in political campaigns. His legendary career included collaborations with many artists, including KISS, Alice Cooper, Cyndi Lauper, Steely Dan, Weird Al Yankovic, and more. Derringer released music as recently as 2022, with his single, “Let It Be The Blues.”

With a career spanning six decades, The Legendary Rick Derringer left an indelible mark on the music industry as a guitarist, Singer songwriter, and producer. As a member of the McCoys, he achieved fame with hits like “Hang On Sloopy.” Still live and well ,Derringer also worked with notable artists such as Steely Dan, Alice Cooper, Kiss, Weird Al, Cyndi Lauper, and Barbra Streisand, and penned hits like “Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo” and “Real American.”
Derringer’s legacy extends beyond his music, entertaining fans with his signature energy and talent. His passing leaves a void in the music world, and he will be deeply missed by fans, colleagues, and loved ones.
