On February 28 & 29, 2024, Indiana University will host Black Metal is for Everyone!, a 2-day symposium and concert in Bloomington, IN. The symposium will include a few workshops and roundtable discussions, a reception, and a black metal marketplace. The concert is a show with Fell Ruin (Detroit, MI) and Eudaemon (Minneapolis, MN).
During the symposium, attendees can look forward to learning more about modern black metal and the ways many bands have shifted from the historical themes of Satanism and church burnings into themes like social justice and environmental stewardship. A couple of highlights are a workshop on Queer Methods with Margaret Killjoy, author and founder of the black metal band Feminazgûl, and a rountable discussion with the editors of Black Metal Rainbows, a collection of essays and artworks demonstrating the long history of inclusion in black metal.
The symposium portion is free and open to the public, and the concert is a benefit for Girls Rock Bloomington with a suggested $10 donation.
