20) Eleine, We Shall Remain (Atomic Fire)

Eleine isn’t Nightwish or your everyday symphonic metal. Their music goes to a darker level, bringing them into a class of their own. We Shall Remain is a perfect example, and it well deserves to be recognized as one of 2023’s best albums.

Key Track: “Never Forget”

19) Enslaved, Heimdal (Nuclear Blast)

After remaining mainly progressive, Heimdal sees more of a return to Enslaved’s heavier, progressive black metal beats. It’s a beautiful mix between the two.

Key Track: “The Eternal Sea”

18) Skald, Huldufolk (Decca)

Nordic folk act give Heilung vibes but stand out in their own craft. With the variety of instruments used, dating back to the 14th century, the record captures something unique, and they even gave a fun metal twist adding a Rammstein cover.

Key Tracks: “Herr Mannelig,” “Du Hast,” “A Forest”

17) Dying Fetus, Make Them Beg For Death (Relapse)

Dying Fetus are going to continue to release brutal death metal. You wonder how they can be so consistent and yet have it work and work well.

Key Track: “When The Trend Ends”
