Maynard James Keenan had a lot of things to talk about while on the WTF with Marc Maron podcast, including about the tour with Bill Hicks that never came to be. One thing that might intrigue Tool fans, though, is the update he gave on the long awaited new album.
Around the 1:31:30 mark, Maynard said the following about the current status of Tool’s new album:
“I’m gonna stop by the rehearsal space today, in theory, having beaten them up going ‘please give me music, please give me music, please give me music, please give me music, please give me music.’ In theory they have a CD for me today, to listen to some jams, so we can get this thing going.”
He then followed that up by saying he had yet written lyrics (“I can’t write words until I hear the sounds,” he claimed). By now you’re likely wondering what significance these comments have, given that they sound reiterate what Maynard’s been saying since the beginning of the year. Well, as Blabbermouth points out, Maynard’s interview on WTF with Marc Maron actually recorded back in March (though not airing until this past weekend). So does that mean Maynard has actually started writing lyrics for the new Tool album despite previous reports?
Last we heard from drummer Danny Carey, it was still just “three of us” and that Tool likely won’t be heading into the studio till the end of the year (meaning no new album till 2014, most likely). Still, the fact that there’s a chance that Keenan has started working on his contributions to Tool’s new album is the best update we’ve heard out of the band’s camp in a while.
