With the fifth season of VH1 Classic’s That Metal Show debuting this Saturday (8), things have changed a bit. No, that doesn’t mean that the show is going to suddenly start covering underground bands. Baby steps, people. However, there will be a change of scenery. Instead of NYC there the show is usually taped, Eddie Trunk, Don Jamieson, and Jim Florentine will be hosting the upcoming season from Los Angeles. In fact, the show was on hand for the Golden Gods Awards last month. While that recap will be shown on May 22, the season premiere will focus on Lemmy. Jamieson filled us in on what it was like to be a presenter.
First off, I think it’s important to say that it is about time somebody put together an awards show honoring metal music and celebrating its great accomplishments. I am SO honored to have attended and been a part of this event. Myself and my That Metal Show co-hosts Eddie Trunk and Jim Florentine conducted “black” carpet interviews with everyone from Rob Zombie to Vinnie Paul to Rob Halford to Slayer (whose interview was crashed by Dave Mustaine). Hell, we even talked to Robert Englund of Freddy Krueger fame! Who knew he was a metalhead? You will see these interviews cut up into an opening montage for the Golden Gods show that will air on VH1 Classic on May 22. After our “Black” Carpet duties were through, we walked the carpet ourselves, taking pictures and giving interviews. We also answered the question “Who are you guys?” a few times!
Inside we spent most of the show in the VIP room as we were also presenters on the show and they wanted us in one spot where they could keep their eye on us. It was kind of a bummer since we had to watch the proceedings on TV screens. But we also got to hang out and chat with some of our great friends in metal like Alice Cooper (and his daughter Calico), Joey Jordison and Wednesday 13 (who are working on a new Murderdolls album) and Dave Lombardo. Also made some new friends like Phil Demmel from Machinehead and drummer extraordinaire, John Tempesta. There were some great performances from Slash (with Lemmy and Dave Grohl), Rob Zombie (with new touring drummer Joey Jordison) and Fear Factory (back with Dino). Lemmy won an award for Lifetime Achievement and Halford won The Golden God which I think means you’re the most metal motherfucker on the planet.
Jim, Eddie and I were absolutely thrilled give out the award for Album Of The Year. The race was tight. Megadeth, Slayer, Them Crooked Vultures, Alice In Chains, and Mastodon. We got up to the podium, said a few words and then it was time …drum roll please… Alice In Chains! I was so happy when Jerry and Mike came up to accept as they are both great guys and have a brilliant album to be proud of.
After the show, things just got crazier. The highlight for me being Dave Grohl talking to us about what a big fan of the show he is. He told us that he and his wife sit in bed and wonder how Eddie knows all the stuff in Stump The Trunk that he does. Ed said that he does get a lot of questions wrong but Dave just said, “It doesn’t matter. The ones you do get right, you have no business knowing.” We had a great laugh together and then many shots of Crown Royal (dedicated to Dime, of course). After that, things are a little fuzzy but from what I remember, it was a kick ass after-party! Thanks to Bagel and Mark Menghi for getting me to my hotel! Now we just need somebody to start a Heavy Metal Hall Of Fame. Eddie Trunk can…you…hear…me?
